How close can I live to the railroad tracks without having problems with resale?

I have showen homes that are 2 blocks from tracks and found that the cement basment was cracked due to vibration that the train caused when ping buy.Also noise from the horn can be heard for quite a long way. Thats why people do not like living by the tracks. If the tracks are being used frequently maybe find another location.
