I want to paint over varnish....................?

What's the best way to do it ? The doors I want to paint are varnished mahogany, very dark in colour and I want to paint them white. How do I prepare the surface to avoid peeling or cracking of the varnish or do I have to remove the varnish completely. Thanks for the info.
